Our landing at Picton dock was calm and quiet after a long peaceful cruise down Queen Charlotte Sound. The day was edging away from the light so we drove hard for the western side where we planned to take the coast road as far as possible then head inland to the snow fields of Queenstown. Later we reached a tiny, remote place called St Arnaud where it was no problem to find a silent spot to park up the night. The atmosphere here was silent apart from distant bird call and we admired the scenery at dawn as we were down a long valley surrounded by high rugged mountains. The weather was grey but in this surrounding it seemed appropriate. On our way coastward we stopped at Buller Gorge to walk across the Buller river on a single track suspension bridge (the longest in NZ) I came back on a 'zip' line ride. We left after lunch and drove to the coast road. We were treated to wonderful coastal vistas from curving hilltop viewpoints to tiny bays surrounded by tropical ferns and washed with crashing surf.
